Apple Dumpling Gang

Last week Sam checked out a book from the library that he tells me he has read many times.  It is a younger read than some he enjoys, such as Science encyclopedias.  He brought it home and asked if I'd copy the recipe found in the back of the book for Apple Dumplings.  Of course I would and I knew what was next.  I knew it would take an evening with time and tonight was the night.

The book called Andy & Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure is part of a project developed by the Rotary Club of Fairborn, OH to teach the "Four-Way Test" something created by a Chicago Rotarian in 1932 to improve his business.  Basically it teaches being honest, fair giving building goodwill and benefiting all concerned.

Sam has not yet asked to start an apple dumpling making business.  I'm hoping the lengthy time we spent in the kitchen tonight might help with that.  He helped and rolled out the dough for several apples.  We made a double batch so he can take one to his favorite librarian.  He only has 4 more weeks left at his current school.  I have to say the librarian has been fantastic to Sam.  She has helped him find books in his interest areas even long ago when information books weren't quite on the charts for his grade.  She even gave him a science book he has brought home may times.  I'm sure the reason the book was on the give-away list was from Sam's loving it so many times.  Now it's home is in Sam's library in his own bedroom.  We will miss Mrs House.

So the apple dumpling gang consisting of Mom and Sam had some fun tonight and everyone in the family enjoyed it.

Here is a link to the story being read.

Here is a link to the website about the program it is a part of.

It looks like fun. It is wonderful when you find an educator that really takes the time to help your child.
