For several years I have had a fun tradition with our oldest son who is now 9. We love to watch for shooting stars on an early August morning when conditions are just right. Several years ago when we were in Illinois we woke up around 3am and drove not too far from the house into what we thought was blackness next to a large cornfield. I must admit it was a bit eerie even though we could see the glow of the city lights in the distance. I was sure some creature would come wandering out from between the corn! In fact we both hung out the windows of the van to stargaze, which wasn’t the most comfy but felt safer. It seemed like it took forever before we finally saw one very clear shooting star. That one star was plenty of excitement for weeks to come and enough to start the annual tradition. I was so happy last year when August rolled around for our tradition because we could walk out on our back deck with some chairs and stare into the blackness of the night without a bunch of city light pollution. We are again looking forward to this annual activity in the coming wee hours of the morning. Check out what NASA has to say about the viewing this year. Looks like the further west you are in the US the better your sighting as much as 100+ an hour! We will settle on our northern Midwest viewing and maybe we can make a few wishes that will come true.
